Legion Corner

Legion Corner for October 30th, 2025

Glenn Booker,
Public Relations Officer, Branch 183

Tomorrow, Friday, October 31st, marks the start of our 2025 Poppy Campaign, and we will have Poppies available at the Legion Bar by donation. In addition, we will have the following items on sale should you wish to purchase them.

Lawn signs, (2 styles, 16x24") - $25; Metal Lawn Poppy - $20; Wristbands - $5 and Poppy Centres - $1.

Also, we could use some members to volunteer on Saturday, November 8th, to help canvass businesses. If you would like to help out, please reach out to our Poppy Chair, Sandra Benbow. Thank you in advance.

We wanted to remind everyone that this year we distributed our Poppy Donation Envelopes via the 'Blue Flyer Bag, during the week of October 27th. If you do not typically receive the Blue Flyer Bag they will also be available at the Legion Bar, Sleepers Bed Gallery and InStyle Hair Studio.

Instead of mailing your donation envelope, you can drop it off at the Legion Bar, Sleepers Bed Gallery, or InStyle Hair Studio, or message us on Facebook, and someone will arrange for a pickup. Last year you helped raise $52,274, and we want to try to do even better this year, with your help.

Every poppy counts. Every donation honours a veteran and the sacrifice they made for us.

We will continue to remind you of these important dates over the next few weeks... The Branch 183 Ceremonies of Remembrance will be held on Sunday, November 9th, at 2:00 p.m. in Tiverton at Tiverton Lion’s Memorial Park, and in Kincardine, where the service will take place on Tuesday, November 11th, at 10:00 a.m. in the Legion Hall, with the wreath-laying ceremony to follow at the cenotaph.

The Catch the Ace draw winner for Week #15 was Deborah Pannell. Deborah took home the Weekly Prize of $1,686!  She chose envelope #8, which revealed the Four of Diamonds, so the Ace remains hidden and we are projecting that the jackpot will grow to $30,000. Remember to pick up your tickets at any of our local retailers — the Kincardine Legion Bar, Kwik Way (Tiverton), Sleepers Bed Gallery, Jean’s Family Restaurant, or InStyle Hair Studio. Don’t forget, you can also buy your tickets online at kincardineace.com. As a little hint, we will have a guest writer doing the Legion Corner next week, and this person knows A LOT about our Catch the Ace, so perhaps expect some interesting info in this section next week 🙂 No pressure, maybe some stats? How many tickets have been pulled since inception perhaps?

At last weekend’s Meat Draw, we had triple double-dippers. Steph Rutledge, Shannon Allen and Brian McKay all won 2 prizes each. The winner of the 50/50 Draw was Doug Holtby and he took home $168.00. Remember we have a Meat Draw every Saturday, and our next MEGA Meat Draw will be coming on December 13th. This coming weekend, Kim will be at the Meat Draw once again if you wish to renew your Legion membership while the Early Bird rates apply.

For those that watch for these details, our dinner food for next week’s Bingo, on November 6th, will be Chili. Also, our November Trivia Night is next week, on Friday, November 7th. We will have food available for Trivia as well, including nachos and wings, and fries. Sign up your team today!

Approaching soon is our Annual Kincardine Legion Craft Show & Bake Sale, on Saturday November 15th, from 9:00 a.m. – 3:00 p.m. Admission is free. Donations to the Bake Sale can be dropped off at the hall bar Friday afternoon or Saturday morning before 9:00.

October 30, 2025

Legion Corner for October 23rd, 2025

Glenn Booker,
Public Relations Officer, Branch 183

I want to start off this week with some important information about the upcoming 2025 Poppy Campaign, which runs from October 31st – November 11th. This campaign is a critical piece to how we help our Veterans, and with the current postal issues we are somewhat concerned.  We are really hoping that the public will pivot with us and make this year truly memorable!

This year we are distributing our Poppy Donation Envelopes via the 'Blue Flyer Bag' during the week of October 27th. If you do not typically receive the Blue Flyer Bag they will also be available at the Legion Bar, Sleepers Bed Gallery and InStyle Hair Studio.

Instead of mailing your donation envelope, you can drop it off at the same retailers above OR message us on Facebook and someone will arrange for a pickup.

All monies must go directly to Veterans, with the exception of a small percentage. That small percentage can be donated to our local hospital towards a specific piece of equipment, which we did last year purchasing a Blanket Warmer and an ECG Machine for the Kincardine and Community Health Care Foundation. Last year you helped raise $52,274 and we want to try to do even better this year, with your help.

Every Poppy Counts. Every Donation Honours A Veteran And The Sacrifice They Made For Us.

Now on to other news! Congratulations to Janet Edwards who won the weekly prize of $1,687 in the Week #14 Catch the Ace draw. Janet selected envelope #34 but it revealed the Queen of Clubs, so the Ace remains hidden. Next week’s estimated jackpot is expected to reach $28,000! Get your $5 tickets online, at the Legion Bar, or at any one of in-person retailers. Each purchase you make has an impact back into our community.

At the October 18th Meat Draw, we had a quadruple-dipper. Wait, did I read that correctly? Yes, it seems as if Jamie White won four times, and... you won’t believe this... he also won the 50/50 draw. Jamie took home $148 for the 50/50 win. If you see Jamie maybe see if you can get some tips or secrets out of him.

I know I remind you every week, but we just don’t want anyone to forget to take advantage of our Early Bird Legion rates. You can renew now, until November 30th, and save - memberships are $55, with a special $50 rate for Veterans. Kim will be at the Meat Draw again on Saturday if you have any questions or wish to renew with her.

Here is another reminder, as we are getting closer to Remembrance Day. The Branch 183 Ceremonies of Remembrance will be held on Sunday, November 9, at 2:00 p.m. in Tiverton at Tiverton Lion’s Memorial Park, and in Kincardine, where the service will take place on Tuesday, November 11, at 10:00 a.m. in the Legion Hall, with the wreath-laying ceremony to follow at the cenotaph.

It seems people enjoy hearing what the food will be for next week’s Bingo. So for next week, on October 30th, we will have Beef on a Bun back on the menu for $6.00. Also, in case you didn’t see it last week, plan ahead to attend the November Family Dinner, which is scheduled for Sunday, November 23rd, and turkey will be on the menu.

The Annual Kincardine Legion Craft Show & Bake Sale is coming in November. It will be on Saturday November 15th, from 9:00 a.m. – 3:00 p.m. Admission is free. Any and all donations are greatly appreciated! Donations to the Bake Sale can be dropped off to the hall bar Friday afternoon or Saturday morning before 9:00.

Legion Corner for October 16th, 2025

Glenn Booker,
Public Relations Officer, Branch 183

The Catch the Ace draw Week #12 winner was Peddie Fyke. Peddie took home the weekly prize of $1,283, but did not find the Ace of Spades. Peddie chose envelope #39, which revealed the Jack of Clubs inside. Let’s see if we can push next week’s estimated jackpot to reach $25,500! Tickets are available at kincardineace.com, and at these local retailers: Kincardine Legion Bar, Kwik Way, Tiverton, Sleepers Bed Gallery, Jean’s Family Restaurant, and InStyle Hair Studio.

At the October 11th Meat Draw, we had just one double-dipper. Congrats to Lanna Colley, who won twice! The winner of the 50/50 Draw was Gary Goessel, and he took home $92.00. Congrats to all the winners. If you are coming to this Saturday’s Meat Draw and have not renewed your Legion Membership for 2026 (or would like to join), our Membership Chair, Kim, will be available to help you get your renewal done. Be sure to take advantage of our Early Bird Legion rates, from now until November 30th - memberships are $55, with a special $50 rate for Veterans.

A huge thank-you goes out to everyone who came to our Annual Envelope Stuffing Day on Thursday and made quick order of stuffing

As a reminder, our Branch 183 Ceremonies of Remembrance will be held on Sunday, November 9, at 2:00 p.m. in Tiverton at Tiverton Lion’s Memorial Park, and in Kincardine, where the service will take place on Tuesday, November 11, at 10:00 a.m. in the Legion Hall, with the wreath-laying ceremony to follow at the cenotaph.

Many people have been enjoying the food we are providing before Bingo on Thursdays, with some people eating before they play and others just stopping in for dinner. For next week, on October 23rd, we will have Sausage on a Bun back on the menu for $6.00.

While we are on the topic of food, our next Family Dinner is scheduled for Sunday, November 23rd, and turkey will be on the menu.  So be sure to save the date!

Lastly, we’ve got some news about our New Year’s Eve event with the Adam Cousins Band. Tickets are in and will go on sale at the Legion Bar starting after Remembrance Day, on November the 12th. Tickets are $50 for Legion Members, and $60 for non-members. This event sells out fast so be sure to get your tickets.

Legion Corner for October 9th, 2025

Glenn Booker,
Public Relations Officer, Branch 183

The Catch the Ace draw each week brings on such conflicting emotions, doesn’t it? We’re happy someone wins the weekly prize, and while we would clap if the winner also found the Ace, we really don’t want that to happen, because we all want to see the jackpot grow bigger. So it’s awesome that our Week #12 winner Jennifer Virtue took home the Weekly Prize of $1,415! But, since Jennifer’s choice of envelope #24 revealed the Six of Clubs, the Ace remains hidden, and we get to grow the jackpot. With your help and ticket purchases, we estimate next week’s jackpot will reach $24,000. So don’t delay, pick up your tickets today!

At last weekend’s Meat Draw we once again had double triple-dippers. Congrats to Scott Allen and Heather Roppel who won both three prizes each! The winner of the 50/50 Draw was Steve Musselman and he took home $67.50 - congrats Steve!

Thursday, October 16th is our Annual Envelope Stuffing Day. If you would like to help us stuff Poppies in envelopes, please join us and help us prepare for the 2025 Poppy Campaign. Coffee and muffins will be available at 9:00 a.m. and lunch will be served. Thank you in advance, and feel free to bring a friend!
If any local businesses or individuals wish to purchase and place a wreath of Remembrance at one, or both of these ceremonies, we are offering Wreaths $65 each. All wreaths will be labelled and announced by our emcee as they are presented.
Please reach out to our Poppy Chair, Sandra Benbow, at sbenbow183@outlook.com to ask for our easy order form, and instructions on how to e-transfer if you are interested.

We are continuing with having food available before Bingo on Thursdays, and next week on October 16th, we will have Chilli on the menu for $6.00. Remember you don’t have to be playing Bingo to come out for the food, you can just come for dinner.

A big thank you to Todd Thompson for hosting our October Trivia Night. During the night Branch 183 made a $1,000 donation to Todd’s Movember campaign for men’s health. Congratulations to Team PHC who came out on top and won the night, but just by a slim margin of 2 1/2 points. Looking ahead, the November Trivia will be on Friday, November 7th.

A reminder that our early bird Legion membership campaign is still on! From now until November 30th, memberships are $55, with a special $50 rate for Veterans. Kim, our Membership Chair, is available to answer questions and can often be found at the Saturday Meat Draws with forms ready. If you prefer, online renewal is also quick and easy. Take advantage of early bird pricing while it lasts!

The Provincial winners in the Primary, Junior, Intermediate and Senior categories will then be submitted to Ottawa for judging at the National level. Public Speaking
Ontario Command Public Speaking Contest, part of the Legion's Youth and Education program, is meant to give young people an opportunity to speak in public. The individual chooses their own subject matter for the address. When is the contest held? The contest date is set by each Branch, and is normally in early January or February of the year. The contest progresses through Zone, District and Area levels, concluding at the Provincial level in May of each year. Dates for the contests at Branch, Zone, and District level should be established by the respective chairmen in September of each year, with careful selection being given to ensure that the contests at the various levels are not held on holiday weekends, school breaks, etc. The deadline date for the area contests will be at least two weeks prior to the Provincial Contest which is held on the 1st Saturday in May.

Poppy & Remembrance

History of the Poppy

Each November, Poppies bloom on the lapels and collars of millions of Canadians. The significance of the Poppy can be traced back to the Napoleonic Wars in the 19th century, over 110 years before being adopted in Canada. Records from that time indicate how thick Poppies grew over the graves of soldiers in the area of Flanders, France. Fields that had been barren before battle exploded with the blood-red flowers after the fighting ended. During the tremendous bombardments of the war, the chalk soils became rich in lime from rubble, allowing the “popaver rhoeas” to thrive. When the war ended, the lime was quickly absorbed and the Poppy began to disappear again.

The person who first introduced the Poppy to Canada and the Commonwealth was Lieutenant-Colonel John McCrae of Guelph, Ontario, a Canadian Medical Officer during the First World War. John McCrae penned the Poem “In Flanders Fields” on a scrap of paper in May, 1915 on the day following the death of a fellow soldier. Little did he know then that those 13 lines would become enshrined in the hearts and minds of all who would wear them. McCrae’s poem was published in Punch Magazine in December of that same year, and the poem later served as inspiration three years later for Moina Michael, an American teacher. Moina Michael made a pledge to always wear a Poppy as a sign of Remembrance.

During a visit to the United States in 1920, a French woman named Madame Guerin learned of the custom. Madame Guerin decided to make and sell poppies to raise money for children in war-torn areas of France. The Great War Veteran’s Association in Canada (our predecessor) officially adopted the poppy as its Flower of Remembrance on July 5, 1921.

Today, the Poppy is worn each year during the Remembrance period to honour Canada's Fallen. The Legion also encourages the wearing of a Poppy for the funeral of a Veteran and for any commemorative event honouring Fallen Veterans. It is not inappropriate to wear a Poppy during other times to commemorate Fallen Veterans and it is an individual choice to do so, as long as it’s worn appropriately.

Thanks to the millions of Canadians who wear the Legion’s lapel Poppy each November, the little red flower has never died, and the memories of those who fell in battle remain strong.

How to Wear a Poppy

Throughout the Remembrance period, we see Poppies worn with pride in every corner of our lives to honour our Veterans. The Royal Canadian Legion provides a Poppy Protocol to guide Canadians on appropriate and respectful wearing of the lapel Poppy. However, wearing a Poppy is a personal expression of Remembrance, and how someone chooses to wear a Poppy is always an individual choice.

How to Wear a Poppy
The Poppy should be worn with respect on the left side, over the heart. The Legion’s lapel Poppy is a sacred symbol of Remembrance and should not be affixed with any pin that obstructs the Poppy. While some have chosen to secure their Poppy with a pin, most Legion Branches provide poppy keepers, clear plastic ends that can be attached to the back of the pin so as not to obscure the Poppy yet still keep it secure.

When to wear a Poppy
The poppy should be worn during the Remembrance period, from the last Friday in October until November 11. The Legion encourages the wearing of Poppies at funerals of Veterans, and for any commemorative event such as a memorial service, or the anniversary of the Battle of Vimy Ridge. As well, it is not inappropriate to wear a Poppy during other times to commemorate Fallen Veterans and it is an individual choice to do so.

How to remove a Poppy

Poppies may be worn throughout the Remembrance period, including in the evening after Remembrance Day Ceremony. Some choose to remove their Poppy at the end of the day on November 11. Some choose to remove their Poppy at the conclusion of the ceremony and place their Poppy on the cenotaph or on a wreath as a sign of respect. This has become a poignant tradition each year at the National Remembrance Day Ceremony in Ottawa as thousands of Poppies are placed on the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier.

When a Poppy is removed, it should be stored appropriately or it may be disposed of respectfully. We encourage anyone who finds a Poppy that has fallen to the ground to pick it up and brush it off so that it can be kept or disposed of respectfully.

While Poppies are always free, The Royal Canadian Legion gratefully accepts donations to the Poppy Fund, which directly supports Canada’s Veterans and their families in need.

Canadians outside of the country can get a Poppy from Royal Canadian Legion Branches in the U.S., Mexico, Germany and the Netherlands, or through their Canadian Embassy or Consulate.

We invite everyone across the country to honour and remember Canada’s Veterans by proudly wearing this symbol of Remembrance and taking a moment to reflect.

Bruce Battalion

On December 2, 1916, Lt. Col. Adam Weir, former commander of the 32nd Bruce Regiment, was instructed to form a Battalion made up entirely of Bruce County citizens. Four companies were mobilized: A Company from Walkerton, Cargill, Paisley, Port Elgin and Southampton; B Company from Chesley, Tara, Hepworth and Teeswater; C Company from Wiarton, Lion’s Head, Tobermory, Cape Chin and the First Nations; and D Company from Kincardine, Lucknow, Ripley and Tiverton. The Military Band was mobilized mostly of men from the Chesley Citizen’s Band. Men from each of the districts were relied upon to encourage others to join and recruitment rallies were held across the County.

The 160th (Bruce) Battalion, CEF was a unit in the Canadian Expeditionary Force during the First World War.

Based in Walkerton, Ontario, the unit began recruiting in late 1915 in Bruce County. After sailing to England in October 1916, the battalion was absorbed into the 4th Reserve Battalion on February 15, 1918.

The 160th (Bruce) Battalion, CEF had three Officers Commanding: Lieut-Col. A. Weir (October 17, 1916—May 6, 1917), Lieut-Col. D. M. Sutherland (May 6, 1917—December 1, 1917), and Major A. M. Moffatt (December 1, 1917—February 23, 1918).

Volunteering

Volunteers - The Legion's lifeblood

Our Legion cannot begin to fulfil its mission to veterans, seniors, local children and the community without the dedicated support provided by our volunteers, both members and non-members.

We can only provide these services by raising the necessary funds at various legion events and the rental of our banquet hall.

You can support your local Legion and its mission by volunteering. You do not need to be a member to volunteer, and although we would like you to consider it, it is not necessary.

If you are interested in volunteering or wish more information about volunteering, please reply through the link below. Let us know what type of volunteering you would be interested in. Some of the tasks might be kitchen help, table setting or serving, assisting at bingo or yard work. Please be sure to provide us with your contact info.  including phone and email so that we may discuss how you might become involved.
