Legion Corner

Legion Corner for December 4th, 2025

Glenn Booker,
Public Relations Officer, Branch 183

The Week 20 Catch the Ace jackpot soared to over $45,000! Congratulations to our lucky winner, Leah Lance, who chose Envelope #33, revealing the Five of Hearts. As the Ace of Spades wasn't found, Leah took home the Weekly Prize of $1,943. This means the jackpot continues to grow as we head into the next draw. You can get tickets at our Legion bar, and at our wonderful in-person locations, which include: Kwik Way, Tiverton, Sleepers Bed Gallery, Jean's Family Restaurant, and InStyle Hair Studio. A few reminders about online ticket sales: you need to be in Ontario, and ticket sales close at midnight on Tuesday nights. Buy them at https://kincardineace.com/.

At the November 29th Meat Draw, Dean Miller was our only double-dipper. Shannon Allen won a meat prize and then also went on to win the 50/50 Draw. Shannon took home $112.50. Don’t forget, we are just 2 weekends away from our December 13th MEGA Meat Draw, with music by Sweet Light Crude, and many turkeys to be won. Also, the 50/50 draw at a MEGA Meat Draw gets to be a very large amount of money, so be sure to get some tickets for that draw as well.

Let’s jump into some Donation news, as Branch 183 made some big donations this past week. Our Chair of Charity and Youth Education, Mark Ozorio attended the Special Olympics Kincardine and Area bocce practice at KDSS and presented a cheque for $5,000 to local Special Olympic athletes. Also this week, Mark, along with our President Teri Leslie, presented another cheque of $5,000, to the FRC Team 781 - Kinetic Knights Robotics club. We are pleased to support both of these local community groups.

In his role as Chair of Youth Education, Mark Ozorio was also out visiting some schools this week and presented some awards for the Legion Remembrance Day Literary and Poster Contests. You can see some photos below, from Elgin Market, St. Anthony’s and KDSS. Huron Heights also had some winners which will be given out at one of their assemblies. Congratulations to all the winners and thank you to all students who took the time to create written and graphic pieces for this contest.

Support for our Food Bank Collection has been amazing! We have had to empty the box many times over already. If you haven’t heard, the Legion is collecting unique and often-overlooked items for The Kincardine Food Bank. We have a list of 10 items that are always in need, but feel free to bring other items of your choice as well. Our suggested list is as follows... Feminine Hygiene Products, Coffee/Tea, Diapers/Pullups, Rice, Baby Wipes, Peanut Butter, Laundry Soap/Pods, Dried Pasta, Dish Soap, and Pasta Sauce (meatless). You can drop off your items to the big box in our Legion Hall Lobby as you attend many of our weekly events such as Bingo, Meat Draws, Darts, Trivia, and Jam Sessions. Thank you for your support!

Our December Trivia night is on Friday, December 12th, and sign up is now open. There will once again be food available. We will have Wings & Fries, and Nachos for sale, so plan to come on out to the final Trivia of 2025. Santa hats and festive apparel are encouraged!

On the menu for the Dec.11th Bingo night will be the popular Chicken Penne Alfredo. Remember you don’t need to be playing Bingo to come enjoy the dinner, you can just eat the good food and go home for a nap 🙂 But you will want to stay and play if you are interested in the big turkey giveaway on Dec. 11th or in the $1,200 jackpot on Dec. 18th!

Legion Corner for November 20th, 2025

Glenn Booker,
Public Relations Officer, Branch 183

The Catch the Ace draw winner for Week #18 was Louise Babbitt. Louise took home the Weekly Prize of $1,910.  She chose envelope #15, which revealed the Seven of Hearts, and a collective sigh of relief resounded in the Legion Clubroom. As the Ace was not found we move on to Week #19, where the estimated Jackpot should top $40,000! On behalf of the Royal Canadian Legion MacDonald Br. 183 Kincardine, Huron Shores Hospice, and the Tiverton & District Lions, we are so grateful to everyone who purchases tickets each week in support of our trilogy of charities. In case you are the type of person who looks ahead, and are wondering about Catch the Ace Draws near the holidays... Yes, there will be a draw on December 24th (Christmas Eve) and December 31st (NYE).

Be sure to save Saturday, December 13th, to attend our next MEGA Meat Draw, with many turkeys to be won, and some fine music by Sweet Light Crude. At the November 15th Meat Draw, we had two double-dippers, with Matt MacArthur and Heidi Allen both winning two prizes each. The winner of the 50/50 Draw was Jane Bonnett and she took home $120.00. Congrats to all the winners.

We want to congratulate Jim McDonald, Branch 183 Past-President, on his Ontario Veterans Awards for Community Service Excellence. The award recognizes Jim’s meaningful contribution to our community. Comrade McDonald’s efforts with the Royal Canadian Legion and the Special Olympics have had a lasting impact.

Branch 183 is excited to let you know about a new initiative we have started for this holiday season. The Legion is collecting unique and often-overlooked items for our local food bank - The Kincardine Food Bank. ❤️ Rice

🤍 Baby Wipes

❤️ Peanut Butter

Legion Corner for November 13th, 2025

Glenn Booker,
Public Relations Officer, Branch 183

UPDATED!!!

Here are some REVISED Bingo updates. Next week, on Thursday, November 20th, the food before Bingo will be Penne Pasta with Chicken in Alfredo Sauce.
Looking ahead, there will now be three Bingos in December:
Dec. 4th - Regular Bingo.
Dec. 11th - there will be turkey prizes given away.
Dec. 18th - $1200 Jackpot, this will be the final Bingo for 2025.
Bingo will resume in 2026 on Thursday, January 8th.

To begin this week we need to send out a huge amount of thank-yous. We are extremely grateful to the community for your support of our 2025 Poppy Campaign and the Remembrance Day services, ceremonies, and activities. We won’t even try to name everyone who helped with this—the busiest time of the year for Branch 183—for fear of leaving anyone out, but know your efforts are deeply appreciated.

The ceremonies and services in Tiverton and at the Kincardine Legion all went very smoothly due to the hard work of so many people, who helped plan, organize, cook, arrange wreaths, sort donations, deliver Poppy boxes, and so much more.

We are thankful to the St. Anthony students who participated in the No Stone Left Alone initiative, paid their respects and thanked deceased veterans for their service yesterday at the Kincardine Cemetery.

If you were unable to attend the ceremonies in person, you can check out our Branch 183 Facebook page for some photos and videos from each event.

Lastly, a thank you to the community members who wore a Poppy, made a donation, attended a ceremony, thanked a Veteran, and took a few moments to remember the service they gave, to ensure our freedoms today. Lest We Forget.

The Catch the Ace draw winner for Week #17 was Heather Roppel. Heather took home the Weekly Prize of $1,710.  She chose envelope #14, which revealed the Three of Spades, which was a little too close for comfort. The Ace remains hidden and we are projecting a jackpot next week of $37,500. Don’t forget, you can also buy your tickets online at kincardineace.com. Thanks to our ghost writer last week who gave us some interesting Catch the Ace tidbits and stats, they were so interesting!

At last weekend’s Meat Draw, we had just one double-dipper, and that was Paul Hervieux. The winner of the 50/50 Draw was Cookie Quinn and she took home $100.00. Congrats Cookie, don’t spend it all on yarn! Save the date for the next MEGA Meat Draw, which will be on December 13th, and the word is that there will be turkeys to be won. There will also be music at the MEGA Meat Draw, provided by Greg Pahl’s band - Sweet Light Crude, so plan to attend!

Congratulations to the winning team from last week’s November Trivia Night - Team Les Quizerables. The next Legion Trivia will be on Friday, December 12th.  Wear your Santa Hats!

This Saturday is our Annual Kincardine Legion Craft Show & Bake Sale, on Saturday, November 15th, from 9:00 a.m. – 3:00 p.m. Admission is free. We could still use more baked goods as donations to the Bake Sale, which can be dropped off at the hall bar Friday afternoon or Saturday morning before 9:00.

Here are some Bingo updates. Next week, on Thursday, November 20th, the food before Bingo will be Penne Pasta with Chicken in Alfredo Sauce. Looking ahead, there will be just two Bingos in December, on Dec. 4th and Dec. 11th. At the final Bingo for 2025, on Dec. 11th, there will be turkey prizes and a $1200 Jackpot. Bingo will resume in 2026 on Thursday, January 8th.

Tickets, get ur tickets here... Tickets are on sale for our December events, The Ballaghs on December 14th, for $25, and New Year’s Eve with the Adam Cousins Band, which are $50 for members, $60 for non-members.

Please help us spread the word about our Veterans Christmas Banquet, which is on Sunday, December 7th. Doors open at 2:30 pm (14:30) with Dinner at 5:00 pm (17:00). There is no charge to Veterans, Spouses, Widows & Caregivers, and guests are welcome at a cost of $22.00. If you know a Veteran please let them know to kindly RSVP by Friday November 28th to David Carson at 519-386-5314 or email David at sailorkit@gmail.com.

In closing, a final thank you to last week’s ghost writer who did the Legion Corner in my absence.

Legion Corner for November 6, 2025

Ghost Written for Glenn Booker,
Public Relations Officer, Branch 183

This weekend marks the beginning of our Remembrance Day ceremonies and events. Friday, November 7th at 9:30 am, Veterans and members of the Legion are attending Kincardine District Secondary School. KDSS is conducting a ceremony to honour Veterans. If you're a Veteran, you are invited to attend and meet these thankful students and staff. Saturday, November 8, the Kincardine Bulldogs will be hosting a Veterans Night at their
home game facing the Mount Forest Patriots. Veterans can enjoy free admission with the presentation of their veteran I.D. Members of the Kincardine Legion will be present for the opening ceremony. November 9, you’re invited to attend the Tiverton Remembrance Day Ceremony at the Tiverton Cenotaph at 2:00 pm. On November 11, all are welcome to attend the Remembrance Day ceremony at the Kincardine Legion, 218 Lambton St.
The ceremony commences with a service in the Legion Hall at 10:00, followed by a ceremony at the cenotaph along with wreath laying at 10:45 am. All are invited for a light lunch in the Legion Hall following the ceremonies. There will be no access to the Legion parking lot from 10:15 am to 11:45 am, as Lambton Street will be closed for the ceremony.
Please wear your Poppy this week to remember and honour those who have served and sacrificed.
If you are in search of a reliable way to return your Poppy donation envelope, deposit boxes are available at the counters of InStyle Hair Studio, Sleepers Bed Gallery and of course the Legion Club Room Bar. Our Poppy donation campaign is the pillar of our veteran support programs.
Of regular interest to Legion followers, the Meat Draw of Saturday past included some frequent flyers. Representing the Tiverton Veterans Lounge crowd, Doc Roppel won twice. He had a quality selection of products provided by Roger and his stellar crew at Sobeys, including two large beef roasts. The Allen family ensured their 1, 442 weeklong winning streak remained intact with a win by Shannon. Charles Samms won $128.00 dollars in the
50/50. Of note, Doug Holtby, last week's winner of the 50/50, has been suspiciously absent from the Club Room since his new found wealth. Consider dropping into our weekly meat draw Saturdays starting at 3:00 pm, it's where the cool people hang out.
Catch The Ace week #16 was another success. Success means Alex Duthie of Kincardine won $1892.00 dollars but did not reveal the Ace. The draw continues with an estimated jackpot of $35,000 dollars. Get your tickets early and often. All the draws are broadcast live on the Catch the Ace Facebook page at 4:00 pm on Wednesdays. There are 120 episodes archived on the page. If there's nothing on Netflix, go back and review each episode like our week three winner Steve is doing right now. He has determined through his research Catch the Ace has raised 1.275 million dollars since the inception of the online game. Given away
to winners is nearly 640,000 dollars. Also, the same amount has been given to local charities and causes. We thank Steve for his research and encourage everyone to come down to the Legion in person Wednesday afternoons and enjoy the draw live.
Check our Facebook page for upcoming events. Of note the Mega Meat Draw December 13th, The Ballaghs December 14th and Adam Cousins New Years Eve.
We look forward to the return of our PR Officer next week to resume his weekly Legion Corner.

Legion Corner for November 27th, 2025

Glenn Booker,
Public Relations Officer, Branch 183

The Week 19 Catch the Ace jackpot soared to over $40,000! Congratulations to our lucky winner, Lee Watson, who chose Envelope #12, revealing the Four of Hearts. As the Ace of Spades wasn't found, Lee took home the Weekly Prize of $2,000. This means the jackpot continues to grow as we head into the next draw. Excitement is building, and with ticket sales on the rise, we’re seeing the money "accumulate" like snowfall, which is helping to drive the jackpots higher each week. This is wonderful news for our trilogy of charities - The Kincardine Branch of The Royal Canadian Legion, Huron Shores Hospice, and the Tiverton & District Lions - who will use their share of the proceeds to support our community.

At the November 22nd Meat Draw, we didn’t have any double-dippers at all. Congrats to Sherri, Steve, Joanne, Jeff, Dave, Lynn, Ed, and Kathy! The winner of the 50/50 Draw was Rod Hilton and he took home $165.00. We are only a few weekends away from December 13th MEGA Meat Draw, with music by Sweet Light Crude, and many turkeys to be won. If you haven’t been to a Meat Draw, tickets are 3 for $1.00 for the meat draws, and tickets are good for all the draws. The tickets for the 50/50 Draw are $1.00 each.

We were very sad to hear of the passing of Irv Kennedy this past week, and Branch 183 sends our heartfelt condolences to his family and friends. Mr. Kennedy served in the Royal Canadian Air Force from 1955 until the unification of the Canadian Armed Forces in 1968, and continued his service within the CAF’s Air Command until 1980. Irv was a Legion member for 38 years, and served on the Executive as well.

We are nearly at the end of November, so you have just a few more days to renew your membership and save some money with the Early Bird rates. The regular membership rate for 2026 will be $65, with the exception of Veterans, whose rate is $50.

Branch 183 recently made a donation to the Kincardine Curling Club Junior Curling Program. This donation of $2,286.76 purchased a state-of-the-art curling smart broom. Pete Newton from the Club, explained that this broom will help to boost the skills of local junior curlers with real-time feedback on sweep, speed and pressure. This high-tech tool pairs with a smartphone app to analyze each stroke, helping young players refine their talent, and it is a game changer for the community hub's youth curling program, helping young players train smarter and aim for tournament wins.

Some general updates for the coming weeks... There will be no ‘Walkie Talkies of 183’ meetings on December 5th, 26th and January 2nd. For those that come in and dine before Bingo on Thursdays, next week on December 4th, we will have pulled pork on the menu.

There won’t be a Family Dinner in December, so the next one will be January 11th, 2026.

As you may or may not know, The Royal Canadian Legion is celebrating 100 years in 2026. This week the Legion National Headquarters announced the addition of Ford Dealers of Canada as the Official Partner of The Royal Canadian Legion centenary throughout 2026.

As part of their significant support, Ford Dealers of Canada will present the Grand Prize of a brand-new 2026 Ford F-150 STX to the winner of the Legion’s centenary sweepstakes called the “Legion 100 Win Big Giveaway.”

If you renewed already for 2026 or plan to renew, you will automatically get an entry. If you are interested, there are other ways to gain additional entries, including shopping online at the Legion’s store and by donating online to the Poppy Fund.

As you come out to attend many of our weekly events such as Bingo, Meat Draws, Darts, Jam Sessions, etc., please consider bringing along an item or two for our Food Bank Collection that is running right now. The Legion is collecting unique and often-overlooked items for the The Kincardine Food Bank. If you missed the list of 10 items, here they are once more... Feminine Hygiene Products, Coffee/Tea, Diapers/Pullups, Rice, Baby Wipes, Peanut Butter, Laundry Soap/Pods, Dried Pasta, Dish Soap, and Pasta Sauce (meatless)

You can drop off your items to the big box in our Legion Hall Lobby. Thank you for your support!

Finally, how about a little look ahead a few months in 2026? Branch 183 is planning a dinner and dance for St. Patrick’s Day on March 14th. Left Turn Clyde will be playing the music.

Upcoming Events at Branch 183:

  • Sun., Dec. 7th - Veterans Christmas Dinner - 2:30 p.m.

  • Fri., Dec. 12th - December Trivia Night - 7:00 p.m.

  • Sat., Dec. 13th - MEGA Meat Draw - Music by Sweet Light Crude - 2:00 - 6:00 p.m.

  • Sun., Dec. 14th - The Ballaghs - 2:00 p.m. Tickets are $25 and are on sale now.

The individual chooses their own subject matter for the address. When is the contest held? The contest date is set by each Branch, and is normally in early January or February of the year. The contest progresses through Zone, District and Area levels, concluding at the Provincial level in May of each year. Dates for the contests at Branch, Zone, and District level should be established by the respective chairmen in September of each year, with careful selection being given to ensure that the contests at the various levels are not held on holiday weekends, school breaks, etc. The deadline date for the area contests will be at least two weeks prior to the Provincial Contest which is held on the 1st Saturday in May.

Track and Field
The Royal Canadian Legion’s Track and Field Program allows athletes, ages 17 and under (Youth & Midget) to compete in Track & Field events at little or no cost. Poppy & Remembrance

History of the Poppy

Each November, Poppies bloom on the lapels and collars of millions of Canadians. The significance of the Poppy can be traced back to the Napoleonic Wars in the 19th century, over 110 years before being adopted in Canada. Records from that time indicate how thick Poppies grew over the graves of soldiers in the area of Flanders, France. Fields that had been barren before battle exploded with the blood-red flowers after the fighting ended. During the tremendous bombardments of the war, the chalk soils became rich in lime from rubble, allowing the “popaver rhoeas” to thrive. When the war ended, the lime was quickly absorbed and the Poppy began to disappear again.

The person who first introduced the Poppy to Canada and the Commonwealth was Lieutenant-Colonel John McCrae of Guelph, Ontario, a Canadian Medical Officer during the First World War. John McCrae penned the Poem “In Flanders Fields” on a scrap of paper in May, 1915 on the day following the death of a fellow soldier. Little did he know then that those 13 lines would become enshrined in the hearts and minds of all who would wear them. McCrae’s poem was published in Punch Magazine in December of that same year, and the poem later served as inspiration three years later for Moina Michael, an American teacher. Moina Michael made a pledge to always wear a Poppy as a sign of Remembrance.

During a visit to the United States in 1920, a French woman named Madame Guerin learned of the custom. Madame Guerin decided to make and sell poppies to raise money for children in war-torn areas of France. The Great War Veteran’s Association in Canada (our predecessor) officially adopted the poppy as its Flower of Remembrance on July 5, 1921.

Today, the Poppy is worn each year during the Remembrance period to honour Canada's Fallen. The Legion also encourages the wearing of a Poppy for the funeral of a Veteran and for any commemorative event honouring Fallen Veterans. It is not inappropriate to wear a Poppy during other times to commemorate Fallen Veterans and it is an individual choice to do so, as long as it’s worn appropriately.

Thanks to the millions of Canadians who wear the Legion’s lapel Poppy each November, the little red flower has never died, and the memories of those who fell in battle remain strong.

How to Wear a Poppy

Throughout the Remembrance period, we see Poppies worn with pride in every corner of our lives to honour our Veterans. The Royal Canadian Legion provides a Poppy Protocol to guide Canadians on appropriate and respectful wearing of the lapel Poppy. However, wearing a Poppy is a personal expression of Remembrance, and how someone chooses to wear a Poppy is always an individual choice.

How to Wear a Poppy
The Poppy should be worn with respect on the left side, over the heart. The Legion’s lapel Poppy is a sacred symbol of Remembrance and should not be affixed with any pin that obstructs the Poppy. While some have chosen to secure their Poppy with a pin, most Legion Branches provide poppy keepers, clear plastic ends that can be attached to the back of the pin so as not to obscure the Poppy yet still keep it secure.

When to wear a Poppy
The poppy should be worn during the Remembrance period, from the last Friday in October until November 11. The Legion encourages the wearing of Poppies at funerals of Veterans, and for any commemorative event such as a memorial service, or the anniversary of the Battle of Vimy Ridge. As well, it is not inappropriate to wear a Poppy during other times to commemorate Fallen Veterans and it is an individual choice to do so.

How to remove a Poppy

Poppies may be worn throughout the Remembrance period, including in the evening after Remembrance Day Ceremony. Some choose to remove their Poppy at the end of the day on November 11. Some choose to remove their Poppy at the conclusion of the ceremony and place their Poppy on the cenotaph or on a wreath as a sign of respect. This has become a poignant tradition each year at the National Remembrance Day Ceremony in Ottawa as thousands of Poppies are placed on the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier.

When a Poppy is removed, it should be stored appropriately or it may be disposed of respectfully. We encourage anyone who finds a Poppy that has fallen to the ground to pick it up and brush it off so that it can be kept or disposed of respectfully.

While Poppies are always free, The Royal Canadian Legion gratefully accepts donations to the Poppy Fund, which directly supports Canada’s Veterans and their families in need.

Canadians outside of the country can get a Poppy from Royal Canadian Legion Branches in the U.S., Mexico, Germany and the Netherlands, or through their Canadian Embassy or Consulate.

We invite everyone across the country to honour and remember Canada’s Veterans by proudly wearing this symbol of Remembrance and taking a moment to reflect.

Bruce Battalion

On December 2, 1916, Lt. Col. Adam Weir, former commander of the 32nd Bruce Regiment, was instructed to form a Battalion made up entirely of Bruce County citizens. Four companies were mobilized: A Company from Walkerton, Cargill, Paisley, Port Elgin and Southampton; B Company from Chesley, Tara, Hepworth and Teeswater; C Company from Wiarton, Lion’s Head, Tobermory, Cape Chin and the First Nations; and D Company from Kincardine, Lucknow, Ripley and Tiverton. The Military Band was mobilized mostly of men from the Chesley Citizen’s Band. Men from each of the districts were relied upon to encourage others to join and recruitment rallies were held across the County.

The 160th (Bruce) Battalion, CEF was a unit in the Canadian Expeditionary Force during the First World War.

Based in Walkerton, Ontario, the unit began recruiting in late 1915 in Bruce County. After sailing to England in October 1916, the battalion was absorbed into the 4th Reserve Battalion on February 15, 1918.

The 160th (Bruce) Battalion, CEF had three Officers Commanding: Lieut-Col. A. Weir (October 17, 1916—May 6, 1917), Lieut-Col. D. M. Sutherland (May 6, 1917—December 1, 1917), and Major A. M. Moffatt (December 1, 1917—February 23, 1918).
